Gilman Hu, our new Institute President, chose to put the focus on people during his first address to the membership at the recent Awards Gala during our national convention.
I was heartened by his remarks. His was the same theme I had chosen to emphasize during our far more modest local version of that event.
This may be the first time I’ve ever been in synch with the authority of any national organization. I say we take advantage of this strange confluence.

The BORP Effect
Pre and Post Earthquake Re-Occupancy Program
San Francisco Department of Building Inspection

The Building Occupancy Resumption Program (BORP) was created by the SF Department of Building Inspection in cooperation with SEA, BOMA, and the AIA. Designed to allow San Francisco building owners to assess structures and pre-certify post-earthquake inspection of their buildings by private teams comprised of engineers and architects, and develop a post-disaster implementation plan. The BORP consists of three phases:
- Building assessment and plan preparation
- Update and renewal activities
- Post-disaster program implementation
The Building Inspection Department’s guidelines are designed to assist engineers, architects and building owners in preparation of BORP documents, and to encourage – in CSI vernacular – uniform format. Understanding the BORP can assist us in better preparing our clients for the inevitable.
Join us to learn about the BORP and its processes from David Leung, Engineer, BORP Program, and Vernon Takasuka, Manager, Emergency Operations Center, SF Department of Building Inspection.
